Dental care is a crucial part of pet care. Whether you have a dog breed prone to dental complaints or a furry pet with a history of dental diseases, providing regular dental care at home is as valuable as taking your fur baby to the vet for frequent dental cleaning. Good dental habits help your fur baby have healthy teeth, roots, and gum lines for longer.

Usually, fixing pet dental issues ends with hefty bills, which is why having insurance for pets dogs that includes common dental conditions can provide you with some financial relief when your pet pup needs dental care. With cheap dog insurance, your pet may not be sufficiently covered. So, purchase a policy that offers comprehensive coverage if you want to avail the benefits for specific pet dental troubles. Not all policies are made equal.

While you are getting prepared with a medical financial backup, read these tips on caring for your little pup’s teeth and keeping their mouth clean.

    Use canine toothpaste only

Many dogs enjoy getting their teeth cleaned with flavored canine toothpaste. Pet parents can easily find various flavored canine toothpaste products in pet stores. Ask your fur baby to select from a range of popular flavors like peanut butter, chicken, or beef before you settle on one.

Also, if your doggo has food allergies make sure you don’t buy such items that contain the food ingredients your pet is allergic to. Then, have at least two to three brushing sessions in a week or more if your doggo enjoys it.

    Use water additives

Many dental water additives are available in pet stores. All you need to do is add a specified quantity of an additive to your fur baby’s water bowl as per the instructions. These solutions may have no taste, so making your furry pet drink can be hassle-free. Such solutions can refresh your doggo’s mouth and breath and potentially kill plaque bacteria in the oral cavity. Of course, don’t use any product without your vet’s approval first.

    Offer dental treats

These chews can inhibit plaque and tartar build-up. Talk to your vet to know how frequently you can give them to your pup. You can also discuss with your vet about specially formulated dental food and its efficacy. However, you need to know that not many pet food companies make prescription dental food.

    Periodic dental clean-ups

Dental cleaning at the vet’s office is necessary to ensure plaque and tartar deposited on your pet’s teeth and under the gum lines are removed periodically. Generally, annual dental cleaning is suggested. However, consult your vet for more information, who can advise you correctly based on your pet’s breed, age and so on. The frequency of clean-ups also depends on the current condition of your pet’s teeth and dental history.

The most common dental issues canine pets suffer from are – cavities, tooth fractures, tooth extraction, gingivitis, and other dental diseases because of infections. Primary and regular dental care potentially counters the onset of such dental issues. Even when we cannot prevent them, we can at least delay them.

Insurance for pets dogs can minimize your annual pet health expenses. Purchase cheap dog insurance for an affordable cover. At the same time, if you want more expansive coverage for your fur baby, you can go for a comprehensive cover that includes specific illnesses and dental issues.
